Science Management Office (SMO)
The Science Management Office oversees planning and coordination
of research and technology development activities within
the Human Research Program that will prepare NASA to send
humans to the Moon and on to Mars. The Human Research Program
is diverse covering nearly all aspects of human space travel
from food to exercise, from living environments to extravehicular
activities (EVA). The Science Management Office
- ensures that research objectives and findings are integrated
across these diverse research elements
- works with domestic and international agencies so programs
complement each other
- identifies and cultivates strategic partnerships to
provide the Human Research Program with state of the art
facilities and renowned experts
- manages the selection of science such that humans can
productively and safely travel beyond Earth-orbit
The Office assesses the risks to humans and concentrates
efforts on those that have the greatest impact on human
health for a specific mission type. For example planning
a mission to Mars carries different risks than one to the
Moon. Therefore, the research and technology development
activities must be specific to address the risks for these
different mission types.
